DARPA Announces 2007 Urban Challenge
In an expected move from the military’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the third, and most likely not final, autonomous vehicle competition was announced today. Due to take place in November of 2007, this contest is the obvious next step from the two previous races held in 2004 and 2005. In the “Urban Challenge” vehicles must successfully navigate routes, obey traffic laws, pass vehicles (both stationary and moving), park, and various other tasks on this 60-mile journey.
Because our research goals closely align with many of the checkpoints of this challenge, the ERNEST Team is currently evaluating the possibility of entering the competition. We’re investigating expansion of personnel and sponsorships to meet the accelerated timeline. We’ll keep you posted as the details unfold!
